Timely Topics ...Foreign Missions
World Evangelism - "Go ye into all the world" - was the theme of the Master's last discourse and should be ours also. Circulation is needed in the body of Christ as well as the natural body. Jesus stepped over the threshold of Judaism and embraced the world in His message; we should leap over the walls of our little restricted sphere and go anywhere for Him. May God help US to spread THE GOSPEL as faithfully as the early church. Haven't we the same message, the same power, the same signs, the very same God? If so, woe be unto us if we don't obey!
Surely the cause of Christ deserves more sacrifice than most of us have made. How much per week do you give toward the gospel in other lands? The price of one meal? Five percent of what you put in your mouth? Most people eat too much anyway - it's a fact. By eating less and giving the difference to missions you might have better health - wouldn't need to be prayed for so often and could pray better at the altar; while the heathen too would get the blessings of the Gospel.
A fine speaker was charged a big price for his supper; he decided he would eat accordingly; the result, his stomach was full, his head empty, his speech a failure. May be there have been others.
You cry, "Hard times!" Yes, and worse ones are coming! So turn loose some of your money in God's cause and let Him pay you interest on it before the anti-christ gets hold of it.
One band of 50 or 60 laboring people in California in fifteen months gave $450 for foreign missions besides all other expenses. The Church of God ought to come up with thousands of dollars this year. Let all the preachers boost the cause. Don't be afraid you won't get your share. There is that withholdeth more than is meet, but it tends to poverty. Let's fatten up, you'll get lean in your soul if you withhold.
I want God to be in love with me; then I am to be a cheerful giver. Don't grunt when finances are mentioned, but say, "Praise God" as loud as you open your purse. God bless you all real good.
HOME MISSIONS
This part of the work is also very essential. Many counties of each state where we have churches don't know the full Gospel, not to mention the many states where we have no churches established.
I believe that much good can be done by each church in their vicinity by holding meetings in school house, cottage services, or church houses where they can be had. Also by distributing the "Evangel," getting subscribers for some real missionary work can be done. House to house work has been much neglected but is important. Distributing good tracts is another way to spread this gospel and if you can sing and play some cheerful song you may help someone on life's rugged way.
Those of you who have cars can advertise by painting a few pointed gospel messages on the windshield, sides or back of your car. People in many places are astonished when they see the sign, "JESUS IS COMING SOON" on the car.
Then in many towns street meetings can be held; if you can blow a horn or beat a drum use them too and get this message to all classes. The jails need to be visited also as well as the hospitals and slums of the cities.
Banners can often be used to advantage and mottoes hung on the walls and the windows might cause someone to stop and think. Instead of having your barn painted red with Coco-cola advertisements, a Scripture sign might cost you more money but would pay you better.
Let's do away with unnecessary things and have more money for advertising our great gospel. May we so live that our shouts of praise and songs of victory shall be heard and the joyful sound will go forth to a world bowed with care and someone will be constrained to follow Jesus.
Brother, sister, all can have a part in this great cause. Let us make it known. The Master will bring the reward with Him. Amen!
